Could this black mold be causing our constant coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled out a bag of winter clothes from the back of our built-in wardrobe in the master bedroom and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason for our constant allergy-like symptoms and respiratory issues?

Yes, the black mold you discovered is very likely contributing to your family's persistent coughing and respiratory issues. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth in enclosed spaces like wardrobes, especially when items are stored against exterior walls where condensation can form.

The constant coughing and allergy-like symptoms you describe are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly in children who are more sensitive. The mold spores become airborne and are inhaled, irritating the respiratory system. This is a serious indoor air quality issue that requires immediate attention.

You should arrange for a professional mold inspection. A certified inspector will identify the moisture source—often a small leak, condensation, or rising damp—and assess the extent of the growth, which is frequently more widespread than what's visible. In the UAE, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for proper containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination.

Until the inspection, keep the wardrobe closed and the room well-ventilated. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. The goal is to first fix the moisture issue, then safely remove the contaminated materials and properly treat the area. A post-remediation verification test, ideally from an independent lab, is the only way to confirm the space is truly safe again.
