Could this black mold be causing our symptoms??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the weather got humid last month. I’ve just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage room and found patches of black mold on several jackets and the wall behind the shelving unit. We’ve lived in this villa in Al Barsha for years and never had this issue before. Could this mold be causing their symptoms and how dangerous is it?

Yes, the black mold you discovered could absolutely be causing your children's coughing and headaches. The timing aligns perfectly with the onset of high humidity, which creates ideal conditions for mold growth. The symptoms you describe—persistent respiratory irritation and headaches—are very common reactions to mold exposure, especially in children who are more sensitive.

In Dubai's climate, this scenario is unfortunately common. The intense humidity, combined with condensation issues in less-ventilated storage areas and the constant cycling of AC units, creates perfect breeding grounds for mold. The mold was likely present and dormant on the jackets or in the room's dust, and the recent humidity provided the moisture it needed to bloom into visible patches.

The term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins, but many other black-colored molds can cause similar allergic reactions. Without a lab test, it's impossible to identify the species and its specific health risks. However, any active mold growth in your living environment is a health concern and should be addressed.

Your immediate steps should be to isolate the affected area. Keep the storage room closed off from the rest of the house and do not attempt to clean the mold yourself, as improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your villa. For a case of this size, with both belongings and building materials affected and with residents experiencing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the full extent of the growth, identify the species through lab analysis, and execute a proper remediation plan to safely remove the contamination and address the underlying moisture source.
