Could this hidden mold cause my kids' coughing and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a hidden AC leak. My youngest has been complaining of headaches and a stuffy nose. Could this mold be the cause of their symptoms and how dangerous is it?

Yes, the mold behind your sofa is very likely causing your children's persistent coughing, headaches, and congestion. This is a common reaction to prolonged exposure to mold spores, which become airborne and are inhaled. Children are particularly susceptible due to their developing respiratory systems.

The black mold you found is often Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, both of which are known to produce mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that irritate the respiratory tract and can cause neurological symptoms like headaches. The situation in your Deira apartment is a classic example of a hidden moisture source—in this case, a slow AC condensate leak—creating a perfect breeding ground in our high-humidity climate. Air conditioning units that are not properly maintained can constantly feed moisture into hidden spaces, especially behind furniture placed against exterior walls.

You should arrange for a professional mold inspection immediately. DIY cleaning is not advised for a patch this large, as improper disturbance will release a massive amount of spores throughout your apartment. A certified inspector will identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads inside walls. Remediation must include fixing the AC leak at its source, followed by proper containment and removal of affected materials. Until it's handled, improve ventilation in the room and keep the children away from the area. Their symptoms should be discussed with a pediatrician, as prolonged exposure can exacerbate asthma and allergies.
