Could this hidden mold cause our persistent coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Khalifa City villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner, probably from a hidden leak. We’ve been sleeping right next to this wall. Could this mold be the reason for our persistent sore throats and headaches?

Yes, the hidden mold you found is very likely the cause of your family's persistent coughs, sore throats, and headaches. Exposure to mold spores, especially in a confined sleeping area, commonly causes these exact respiratory symptoms and irritation.

In the UAE's climate, this scenario is unfortunately common. Hidden leaks from AC condensation lines or minor plumbing issues can create a damp environment behind furniture or walls where mold thrives, often out of sight. The constant use of air conditioning can then circulate the spores throughout the room. For a case of this size and with occupants experiencing clear symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source, assess the full extent of the growth (which is often larger than what's visible), and safely contain the area during remediation to prevent spores from spreading. Do not attempt to clean a patch this large yourself, as improper handling can significantly increase your family's exposure. Focus on improving ventilation in the room immediately and keep the area isolated until a professional can provide a assessment and remediation plan.
