Could this mold be causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past couple of weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of our built-in wardrobe in the master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in these black, fuzzy spots. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I know the humidity has been terrible. Could this mold be the reason for their coughs, and who do I even call to get it professionally tested and removed in Dubai?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species) discovered in your wardrobe is the cause of your children's persistent cough. The combination of organic material (cotton clothing), darkness, and high humidity creates an ideal breeding ground. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity is combated with year-round air conditioning, condensation often forms in poorly ventilated, cooler spaces like built-in wardrobes on external walls. This persistent moisture allows mold to proliferate and release mycotoxins and spores into the air.

When these microscopic spores are inhaled, they are a known respiratory irritant and can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and persistent coughing, particularly in children who are more vulnerable. The fact that the symptoms coincided with you disturbing the mold colony is a significant indicator, as this action would have aerosolized a high concentration of spores.

Given the visible growth and the health symptoms present, this is a serious case that requires immediate professional attention. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper handling can significantly exacerbate the contamination and health risks. The remediation process requires expert containment, air filtration, and removal techniques to ensure spores are not spread throughout your home.

For your family's health, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice specializes in this exact scenario. We conduct comprehensive air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, followed by a controlled, professional remediation process in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety guidelines.
