Could this mold be causing our month-long cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for a month and we can't seem to shake it. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom to look behind it and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading up the wall from the corner. We've lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed it. Could this mold be the reason for our constant respiratory issues and what's the proper way to get it cleaned here in Dubai?

The black mold you found is very likely contributing to your family's persistent cough. Mold releases spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are known irritants that can cause chronic respiratory symptoms like coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies, especially in children. A hidden colony of that size, actively growing for an unknown period, is a significant source of indoor air pollution.

Given the description, this is a serious case requiring professional remediation, not a DIY cleaning attempt. In Dubai's humid climate, this mold is almost certainly feeding on condensation or a hidden moisture leak, possibly from a pipe in the wall, a poorly sealed window, or AC condensate drain issue. Simply wiping the visible growth will not address the root cause, and the mold will return.

The proper protocol in Dubai involves three steps. First, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to locate the exact source of the water intrusion. Second, the contaminated area must be carefully contained to prevent spreading spores during remediation. Finally, the mold is physically removed, the underlying cause is repaired, and the area is treated. For a case of this severity, always request a post-remediation verification test from an independent third party to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to a safe level. This is the only way to be certain the problem is resolved.
