Cuold my AC mold be causing my headaches and sore throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing black spots spreading on the wall behind the curtain. My throat has been scratchy in the mornings and I've been waking up with headaches. Is this definitely mold and could it be causing these symptoms?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots are mold growth, specifically triggered by the persistent moisture from the AC leak. The combination of condensed water and organic material in wall dust provides an ideal environment for mold proliferation, a common issue exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity levels and year-round reliance on air conditioning.

The symptoms you describe—morning scratchy throat and headaches—are consistent with exposure to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) released by active colonies. These particulates become airborne, especially when the AC unit operates, and can cause allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and inflammatory responses, particularly during prolonged exposure in an enclosed space like a bedroom.

In the UAE, this is a serious indoor air quality (IAQ) concern. The continuous dampness can also compromise the building's structural integrity and insulation. We strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself, as improper disturbance can aerosolize a significantly higher concentration of spores, worsening the contamination and health risks.

A professional inspection is essential. Our certified technicians use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/surface sampling to identify the species (e.g., Cladosporium, Aspergillus, potentially toxic Stachybotrys) and the full extent of the infestation, often hidden within the wall cavity. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, removing contaminated materials, and applying professional-grade antimicrobials, followed by repairing the AC leak at its source to prevent recurrence.
