Damp closet with black mold: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to feel really damp and I'm finding small black spots on a couple of leather handbags stored in there. This has gotten worse since the weather got really humid a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried it's spreading but I'm not sure if this is something I can just clean with vinegar myself or if I need to call in a professional to check inside the walls?

Black spots on leather in a damp closet suggest active mold growth, which is a common issue here due to our high humidity. Since the problem is on an interior wall and has worsened with the weather, the moisture source is likely condensation from the air or a hidden leak within the wall cavity.
For a small, surface-level issue on a non-porous item, a DIY clean with a vinegar solution can be a temporary measure. However, leather is porous, and mold can penetrate deeply, making it difficult to fully remove. The greater concern is the dampness itself; if moisture is inside the wall, the mold you see is just the visible portion of a larger problem. Simply cleaning the surface will not address the root cause, and the mold will almost certainly return. In the UAE climate, where AC systems run year-round, temperature differences between conditioned rooms and unconditioned wall voids create perfect conditions for condensation and hidden mold growth. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact moisture source using tools like thermal imaging and moisture meters. They can determine if the issue is due to poor ventilation, an AC condensate drain issue, or a plumbing leak. Verifying the extent of the problem with lab analysis of a tape-lift sample is the only way to know the species and potential risk, guiding the correct remediation strategy. |
