Damp smell and black specks in AC: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom in our Jumeirah Park villa has been making this weird damp smell for a couple of months now, and I just noticed some black specks around one of the air vents when I changed the filter. I'm pretty handy, but I'm worried it might be inside the ducts. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here?

Based on the symptoms you’re describing—a persistent damp smell and visible black specks around the vent—this strongly indicates microbial growth, likely mold, within your AC system. This is an extremely common issue here in Dubai and Jumeirah Park due to our high humidity levels, especially when AC units are consistently battling the heat.
While you might be handy, tackling this yourself is not advisable. Using a surface cleaner on the vent will only remove what you can see; the core of the problem is almost certainly inside the ductwork and the cooling coils, which are inaccessible without professional equipment. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and the rest of the villa, potentially causing health issues. In the UAE, proper remediation requires specialized tools like HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial coatings, and techniques that follow strict guidelines to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. A certified inspection is crucial to assess the full extent of the contamination, identify the mold type (some can be more problematic than others), and provide a proper protocol for remediation. For a comprehensive inspection and a definitive solution, you should absolutely call a professional. Our team can perform air and surface sampling to give you a clear picture and a safe, guaranteed resolution.
