Dehumidifier for closet mold or fix AC issue?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has had a recurring black spotty mold on the leather shoes and bags we store in there. We run the AC constantly but the room still feels a bit damp, especially since the recent humidity spike. I’m worried it’s spreading to the walls. What’s the most effective way to stop this for good—should I get a dehumidifier for just that closet, or is there a bigger AC issue I need to address with building management?

A dehumidifier is a temporary fix for a symptom, not the root cause. In Dubai's climate, persistent mold in a closet on an interior wall with constant AC running points to a condensation or humidity control issue within the AC system itself or the building envelope.

The damp feeling suggests the AC may not be effectively dehumidifying the air in that room, which is common if the unit is oversized, undersized, or has a faulty condensate drain. The interior wall location is a key clue; the issue could be a cold bridge within the wall where warm, humid air is condensing, or negative air pressure drawing damp air into the space.

For a lasting solution, start with building management. Dubai Law No. 6 of 2010 and the jointly issued 'Guide for the Maintenance of Buildings in the Emirate of Dubai' place responsibility on them to address defects leading to damp and mold, including issues with central AC systems and building integrity. They should inspect the AC's performance, check the condensate drain line for blockages, and ensure the wall has no leaks or insulation flaws.

A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact source of the condensation—whether it's from the room, the wall, or the AC system—which is necessary to determine the correct remediation. Simply placing a dehumidifier in the closet addresses the moisture but not why the moisture is there, and the mold will likely return.
