Dehumidifier or better solution for moldy windowless bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has no windows and after every shower, the steam just hangs in the air for hours. I’ve been wiping down the walls but I just spotted a few black speckles in the grout between the tiles. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from getting worse in our humid climate, should I invest in a dehumidifier or is there a better solution?

A dehumidifier is an excellent solution, but for a windowless bathroom in Dubai, it's only one part of a multi-step strategy. The core issue is persistent high humidity from showers with no natural ventilation.

Start by running an exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you don't have one, installing a high-capacity model is a priority. Immediately after showering, use a squeegee on all wet surfaces—walls, glass, and tiles—to remove standing water. This single action can drastically reduce the moisture available for mold growth. Keep the bathroom door open as much as possible to allow humid air to dissipate into other, drier areas of the home that are air-conditioned.

For the black speckles you see, address them now before they spread. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner applied with a stiff brush is effective for surface mold. Thoroughly dry the area afterwards.

A small, portable dehumidifier can help, especially if run during and after showering. Look for a model with a continuous drainage option or remember to empty its tank daily. However, it treats the symptom, not the cause. The most effective permanent solution is to mechanically exhaust the humid air. If the mold persists or you see it spreading behind silicone seals or on the ceiling, the spores may have established a foothold out of view. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the full extent and recommend remediation, which might include improving the room's ventilation system at its source.
