Dehumidifier or moisture boxes for closet mold prevention?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Arabian Ranches, has started to get a faint damp smell, especially on my leather bags and shoes. It's been getting worse since the weather turned more humid a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried it's the start of a mold problem and I want to stop it before it ruins my things. What's the most effective way to control humidity and prevent mold in a built-in closet, should I get a dehumidifier or are those moisture absorber boxes enough?

Moisture absorber boxes are insufficient for Dubai's climate, especially in a built-in closet on an outside villa wall. These desiccant boxes are designed for small, sealed spaces like a camera case and cannot handle the volume of humid air infiltrating from an external wall. In Arabian Ranches, the high outdoor humidity, especially overnight, leads to significant condensation on cooler interior surfaces like your closet walls.

A small electric dehumidifier is the most effective solution. Look for a compact model with a built-in humidistat and a continuous drainage option or a large capacity tank. Place it inside the closet and set it to maintain humidity below 60% RH, the threshold where mold growth is significantly inhibited. Ensure the closet door is slightly ajar to allow for air circulation.

For immediate action, remove all items from the closet. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a dilute white vinegar solution to address any early microbial growth. Inspect the external wall for cracks or gaps in the sealant around windows or edges where moist air could be entering; sealing these is critical.

Given the persistent damp smell and the value of the items stored, a professional inspection is warranted. The smell suggests active microbial growth may already be present but not yet visible. An inspection with a borescope can identify hidden condensation or mold within the wall cavity itself, which a dehumidifier cannot reach. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test the air and surface samples from your leather goods to identify the specific species and recommend targeted remediation for your belongings.
