DIY mold removal or call a pro for bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom wardrobe, which is on an interior wall, has started growing black mold spots. I noticed it about three weeks ago when the humidity really spiked, and now a few of our clothes have that damp, musty smell. I'm worried about our health but also don't want to get ripped off. For a job like this in a two-door built-in wardrobe, should I attempt a DIY solution with bleach or is it absolutely necessary to call a professional mold removal company, and what would the expected cost range be for that?

For interior wall mold in a wardrobe, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The mold you see is likely just the surface manifestation; the actual source is often hidden condensation or a minor leak within the wall cavity, which DIY methods cannot address. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall or wood, as it only bleaches the surface while the roots remain, and it can introduce harmful fumes into your indoor air.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity causes condensation on cooler interior walls, especially behind furniture, creating the perfect environment for mold. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning. A proper remediation involves identifying and correcting the moisture source, then removing contaminated materials if necessary.

For a two-door built-in wardrobe, the scope can vary significantly. If the moisture issue is minor and caught early, the cost for professional remediation is typically on the lower end. However, if the drywall or backing is compromised, the scope and cost will understandably be higher. The only way to get an accurate assessment is an on-site inspection to determine the extent of the problem behind the unit.

You can request a company with IICRC-certified technicians and ask how they will verify the job is complete—often through post-remediation testing to confirm spore levels have returned to a normal indoor level.
