DIY mold removal or call a pro for closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to feel damp, and I just pulled out a few winter jackets to find patches of black mold on them. The dehumidifier in the room doesn't seem to be cutting it, especially with this humid weather we've been having. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai to stop it from coming back?

Small patches on non-porous surfaces can sometimes be cleaned with a detergent solution, but black mold on porous materials like jackets and a consistently damp closet wall indicates a persistent moisture issue. In Dubai's high humidity, surface cleaning alone rarely solves the problem, as the underlying cause—often condensation from AC ducts or a wall leak—will cause it to return.

For your situation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold is on personal items, the wall feels damp, and your dehumidifier is overwhelmed, which points to a significant hidden moisture source. A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to locate the source, often a leaking AC condensation drain line or insufficient insulation in the external wall, which is common here.

They can also identify the mold type to assess risk. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials (like damaged drywall or insulation), HEPA vacuuming, and treating the space with antimicrobial solutions. Crucially, they must fix the moisture source to prevent recurrence, which is the most important step.

DIY bleach or vinegar is not advised. It can irritate your airways, may not kill the mold roots, and will not address the hidden water problem. For health safety and a permanent solution, a diagnostic assessment is the most effective first step.
