DIY mold removal or professional for bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black, and I’m pretty sure it’s mold. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and now there’s a constant damp smell in there even though we run the exhaust fan. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company?

Small areas of surface mold on bathroom grout can often be handled yourself. For a patch smaller than one square meter, start with a stiff brush and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner. The key is to dry the area completely after cleaning—use a fan or dehumidifier to remove all moisture, as any dampness will cause it to return quickly.

Given the constant damp smell you describe, the mold may have penetrated deeper into the grout or the wall behind the tiles. This is common in Dubai's high humidity, where condensation builds up in poorly ventilated spaces, even with an exhaust fan running. A persistent musty odor often indicates a hidden moisture source or growth within the wall cavity.

Professional remediation is advised when the problem is recurrent, covers a large area, or involves persistent odors. They use moisture meters to locate hidden dampness and HEPA vacuums to contain spores during removal. For a definitive diagnosis, a lab analysis can identify the mold species, which is important for assessing health risks and ensuring the correct remediation method is used. In many cases, the grout must be fully removed and replaced to solve the problem permanently.
