DIY or pro for black mold in Dubai wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back of our walk-in wardrobe, probably from a slow leak in the ensuite bathroom. The musty smell is really strong when you open the doors. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or is it a definite job for a professional mold removal company in Dubai? And what kind of cost should I expect for a small room?

For a large patch of black mold with a strong musty smell, a professional remediation is strongly advised. The smell indicates a deep, active colony that simple surface cleaning won't address. In Dubai's high humidity, DIY attempts with bleach often fail as they don't kill the roots, and the mold returns quickly from the hidden moisture source.

A slow leak means water has likely seeped into the wall structure and possibly the subfloor, requiring specialized equipment like moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the full extent. Proper remediation involves containment to prevent spores from spreading, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the root cause—fixing the leak and improving ventilation.

For a small room like a wardrobe, expect a process that includes inspection, containment, removal of affected porous materials (like damaged drywall or insulation), and antimicrobial treatment. Without a lab test, you can't confirm the species, but any extensive visible growth with an odor warrants a pro. Companies with their own microbiology lab, like ours, can provide before-and-after testing to verify the space is truly clean and safe.
