DIY or pro for black mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It’s spread to a few shoeboxes and the wall is slightly damp. Should I try to handle this myself with bleach from the supermarket, or is this a job for a professional mold removal company in Dubai, and what would the cost likely be for a small area like this?

DIY removal with supermarket bleach is not recommended for this situation. The damp wall indicates moisture is still active, and bleach only removes surface discoloration without addressing the root cause or the hidden structure of the mold. In Dubai's high humidity, it will almost certainly return.

This requires a professional assessment. The dampness suggests a possible AC leak or condensation issue within the wall cavity, which is common here due to our year-round AC use. A proper remediation involves identifying and fixing the moisture source first, then containing the area to prevent spores from spreading during removal. The affected drywall and materials like the shoeboxes often need to be discarded.

For a small, contained area like a closet, the process is typically straightforward. The cost is generally not prohibitive and is primarily driven by the diagnostic work to find the leak and the protocol for safe removal and disposal, not just the physical cleaning. Any reputable provider should offer a detailed assessment and explain the steps required before giving you a scope of work.
