DIY or Pro for Black Mold in UAE Villa Closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the exterior wall. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think it might be spreading from behind the wallpaper. What's the most effective way to handle this in our UAE climate—should I try a DIY solution with bleach or call a professional company right away?

The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold growth on exterior walls where temperature differences cause condensation. A patch of black mold in a closet suggests a persistent moisture issue, likely from condensation within the wall cavity or a minor leak, not just surface humidity.
For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach can be tried. Use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the mold at its roots. However, scrubbing wallpaper is risky as it can force spores deeper and tear the material, revealing a larger infestation. Given the location on an exterior wall and the potential for hidden growth behind the wallpaper, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation source within the wall that you cannot see. Simply cleaning the surface will be ineffective if the wall itself remains damp. Remediation often requires controlled removal of affected materials, HEPA vacuuming, and addressing the underlying moisture barrier or insulation issue to prevent recurrence, which is beyond most DIY capabilities. |
