DIY or Pro for Small Black Mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside and seems worse since the recent humidity. I'm worried about my family's health and the cost. Is this a DIY job with bleach, or should I call a professional company in Dubai, and what kind of price should I expect for a small area like this?

A small patch of black mold appearing on an exterior wall during humid months is a very common issue in Dubai, often caused by thermal bridging where the cold interior wall meets the humid outside air, creating condensation. While concerning, it's not an immediate panic situation.

Bleach is not recommended. It's mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deep in the porous drywall, and it only bleaches the visible surface, allowing it to return. A better DIY approach is to scrub the area with white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, then let it dry completely. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. For an exterior wall, this often means improving air circulation in the closet and ensuring your AC is dehumidifying properly.

However, DIY is only for very small, surface-level patches (under 1 sq. ft). If it has penetrated the drywall, reappears quickly after cleaning, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is warranted. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact condensation point hidden within the wall cavity. For a small area, remediation might involve targeted drying and antimicrobial treatment, not a full-scale tear-out. Reputable Dubai-based companies with their own microbiology labs can also take a tape sample to identify the species, which confirms the actual health risk, as not all black-colored mold is the toxic Stachybotrys you read about. This scientific approach ensures the solution is permanent.
