Does our AC mold cause our stuffy noses?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell that we first noticed after that really heavy humidity a few weeks back. Since then, my wife and I have both had constant stuffy noses and scratchy throats that clear up when we're at work all day. I pulled the filter out and the area around the vent looks black and dusty. Could this mold be the reason we're feeling sick, and what's the first step I should take to get it properly checked?

Yes, it is very likely the mold in your AC is causing your stuffy noses and scratchy throats. The symptoms you describe—that clear up when you leave the apartment—are classic signs of exposure to mold spores circulating through the AC system. The black, dusty substance you see is almost certainly a buildup that includes microbial growth.

Dubai’s high humidity, especially after periods of heavy weather, creates significant condensation inside AC units. This damp, dark environment is the perfect breeding ground for mold. Year-round AC use means these spores are constantly being blown into your living space.

The first step is to stop the spread. Do not attempt to clean the visible black dust yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. Your immediate action should be to switch off the AC unit to prevent further circulation.

For a proper check, you need a professional inspection that includes air and surface sampling. This is not a standard AC cleaning; it’s a diagnostic process to identify the specific type and concentration of mold present. In the UAE, reputable providers should be able to conduct these tests and provide a lab report detailing the findings, which will determine the necessary remediation steps. This evidence-based approach is crucial to effectively solve the problem and not just mask it.
