Emergency AC mold cleanup needed this weekend?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha has been making us cough for a couple of weeks now, and I finally pulled off the vent cover. The inside of the duct and the insulation are completely covered in fuzzy black mold. We’ve had the AC running constantly since the weather got hot. Is this something I need to get an emergency specialist for this weekend, or can it wait until next week for our building maintenance to take a look?

Black mold in your AC duct is a health concern that warrants prompt action. Given your family is already experiencing respiratory symptoms like coughing, it's not something to ignore for weeks, but immediate emergency service this weekend may not be necessary if you can manage the environment.
For now, turn off the AC to that specific unit to stop spreading spores. Keep the bedroom door closed to contain the area. If possible, use a standalone HEPA air purifier in the room. This can help reduce your exposure until a professional can assess it. In Dubai's climate, constant AC use creates significant condensation inside ducts, and the combination of moisture and dust is a perfect breeding ground for mold. Building maintenance teams are excellent for routine work, but extensive fuzzy growth on insulation often requires a specialized mold remediation protocol, not just a cleaning. The insulation may need to be removed and replaced. You should contact a certified mold inspection company early next week. A proper assessment involves visual inspection and often air or surface sampling to identify the mold type and concentration. Look for a provider that can deliver documented lab results, as this confirms the scope of the problem and verifies the cleanup was effective. |
