Emergency mold cleanup needed for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it looks like it's been there a while, spreading in a big black patch. Given how humid it's been lately, is this something I need to get an emergency cleaning crew for this weekend, or can it wait until next week for a normal appointment?

With kids coughing and visible black mold spreading, this warrants prompt professional attention but likely not an emergency crew. The immediate risk is ongoing exposure to mold spores, which can irritate airways and worsen respiratory symptoms, particularly in children.

For now, limit exposure by keeping the bedroom door closed and ensuring good ventilation elsewhere. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can release a large number of spores into the air. The high humidity we experience in Dubai, combined with potential condensation from AC units, creates ideal conditions for this kind of hidden growth behind furniture.

Schedule a professional inspection and remediation for early next week. A proper assessment will identify the moisture source—often a small leak, condensation from an AC unit, or seepage from a bathroom—and the extent of the spread, which can be wider than what's visible. Reputable remediators will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores during removal, and address the root cause to prevent recurrence. For health concerns like this, a company with its own microbiology lab can provide precise identification of the mold type, which helps in understanding the potential risk and verifying that the cleanup was successful.
