Emergency mold removal or DIY for bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's been incredibly humid in our Jumeirah apartment lately, and the AC doesn't seem to be keeping up. My main worry is how quickly this can become a health hazard—do we need to call someone for emergency mold removal today, or is it something we can handle ourselves this weekend?

Assess the size first. If the patch is smaller than one square meter (about the size of a standard floor tile), it's often manageable as a DIY project this weekend. Given its location behind boxes in a closet, the primary cause is almost certainly restricted airflow combined with our high Dubai humidity, creating a microclimate for mold.
For a small patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move everything out of the closet. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or white vinegar. Dry it thoroughly with a fan. The critical step is addressing the source—leave the closet empty for a few days with the door open and a fan running to ensure it’s completely dry. Check that your AC vent in the room is not blocked and is functioning properly. However, if the mold has spread over a larger area, is inside the wall itself (feeling soft or damp), or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the exact species and check for hidden moisture within the wall cavity, which is common here when exterior walls condense. Remediation companies with their own microbiology labs, like ours, can provide the data to confirm the mold is gone and not just wiped from the surface. For most small, surface-level closet mold found in humid weather, a thorough DIY clean and moisture control is sufficient. |
