Fastest, safe way to remove black mold with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold in the corner of our master bathroom shower. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m worried the humidity from our long showers is making it worse. What’s the fastest and safest way to get rid of this, especially with little ones around?

Black mold in a bathroom shower is common here due to our high humidity and condensation from AC use. For immediate, safe removal with children present, use a simple solution of white vinegar or a 3% hydrogen peroxide spray. Apply it directly to the mold patch, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. This is safer than bleach, which can irritate young lungs and doesn't prevent regrowth.

After cleaning, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls with a squeegee. This is the most critical step to prevent it from returning. For an older building in Bur Dubai, check that your fan is actually venting moisture outside and not just recirculating it into the ceiling void.

If the patch is larger than a square foot, keeps returning quickly despite thorough cleaning, or the children's coughing persists, the issue may be deeper within the wall or grout. In these cases, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the specific mold type and its source, as some varieties require more targeted remediation approaches.
