Fastest, safest DIY black mold removal before professional help?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s been spreading since the humidity kicked in a few weeks ago and I’m really worried about their health. What’s the fastest and safest way to get rid of this ourselves before calling in a professional?

Black mold exposure can cause coughing and respiratory irritation, especially in children. The high humidity in Dubai creates perfect conditions for it to spread quickly behind furniture and on cold walls.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can address it yourself temporarily. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area from your children and pets. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it only surface-cleans and doesn't kill the root in porous materials. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with disposable cloths. Seal all waste in a plastic bag. Increase ventilation in the room by running a dehumidifier and fans; this is critical in our climate to prevent immediate regrowth.

This is a temporary containment measure. Because the mold has already spread and you have health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will use moisture meters to find the hidden water source (often condensation from AC or a minor leak) and conduct air and surface sampling to identify the exact species. This lab analysis is necessary to confirm the risk level and guide proper remediation, which often requires removing and replacing the affected drywall or insulation to fully resolve the problem.
