Fastest way to remove black mold from under wet carpet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a few weeks, and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet near the wall and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of my hand. It's definitely damp underneath. What's the absolute fastest way to deal with this myself before it gets worse?

The fastest initial step is to address the moisture source immediately. Turn off the AC unit to stop the leak and call an HVAC technician for repair. This is the most critical action, as the mold will return if the underlying dampness isn't resolved.
For the mold itself, your priority is containment. Do not disturb the area with a vacuum or aggressive brushing, as this can aerosolize spores. Lightly mist the visible mold with a diluted white vinegar solution (one part vinegar to one part water) to dampen the spores. Carefully cut out the affected section of carpet and underpad, place it in a sealed plastic bag, and dispose of it immediately. This physically removes the bulk of the contamination. After removal, scrub the now-exposed concrete floor or subfloor with the same vinegar solution. Allow the area to dry completely using fans and a dehumidifier; in Dubai's humidity, this is non-negotiable. The area must be bone-dry before considering new flooring. Given the location (bedroom) and that the mold developed from a chronic leak, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The moisture may have wicked further into the wall or subfloor than is visible. In many cases here, what you see is only a fraction of the problem. Verifying the full extent with moisture meters and, if necessary, air testing provides certainty that the issue is fully resolved. |
