Fastest way to remove black mold in Dubai villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been incredibly humid lately. What's the fastest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or is this a job for a professional company here?

That black speckled pattern in your closet is likely a surface mold, common on exterior walls in Dubai due to the high humidity and temperature differential causing condensation. It's a sign of elevated moisture in that area.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a diluted detergent solution, but avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. A better DIY solution is a mix of white vinegar and water or a commercial fungicidal cleaner designed for walls. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning with a fan or dehumidifier; this is critical in our climate.

However, for a recurring problem on an exterior wall, surface cleaning is often a temporary fix. The moisture source must be addressed. This could be a small leak in the roof or wall, or more likely, significant condensation due to inadequate insulation in the wall cavity itself—a common issue in villas.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area, or has a musty odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of the dampness that you can't see. In many cases, effective remediation requires addressing the building envelope issue, not just the visible mold. For a definitive identification of the mold type, a sample can be sent to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis.
