Fastest way to remove black mold in JVC apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It's on the wall that faces the outside and feels slightly damp. What's the fastest way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling my landlord first or a professional cleaning company?

The fastest initial step is to mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water, spray it on the affected area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub it away with a stiff brush. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. This addresses the visible growth but not the underlying moisture source.

You should notify your landlord immediately. Under Dubai rental regulations, structural issues causing dampness, like a potential leak from the external wall or faulty insulation, are typically the landlord's responsibility to rectify. A professional cleaning company can remove the mold, but if the moisture intrusion isn't fixed by the landlord, it will return quickly.

Given the location on an exterior wall in JVC, this is a classic case of condensation due to our high humidity. The temperature difference between the air-conditioned closet and the hot external wall creates a "cold bridge," leading to dampness that mold thrives on. After the initial cleaning, run a dehumidifier in that room and ensure your AC is set to a consistent, cool temperature to minimize condensation. For a patch larger than a square foot, or if the wall feels very wet, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify the exact moisture source.
