Fastest way to safely clean mold from AC unit?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night for the past couple of weeks and I've just discovered a bunch of black spots around the damp areas of our AC unit in the main living room. With the humidity lately, I'm really worried it's mold from the chiller. What's the fastest and safest way to get this professionally cleaned without exposing my family to more spores?

Given the symptoms you're describing, this is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention. DIY cleaning of an AC chiller unit is highly discouraged, as it will aerosolize spores and significantly increase exposure, especially with kids in the home. That coughing is a major red flag.

The fastest and safest method is a multi-step professional remediation process. We start with a full inspection and air quality testing to identify the mold species and spore count, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol. For chillers, the entire system must be addressed, not just the visible spots. The process involves isolating the area with negative air pressure containment, using HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial agents specifically approved for HVAC systems to clean the evaporator coils, drip pans, and ductwork. The system is then treated with a specialized antimicrobial coating to inhibit future growth. All work is done in accordance with DM and DCD guidelines for indoor environmental quality.

For a situation like yours, with health symptoms already present, I strongly recommend you stop using the unit and call for a professional inspection immediately. Our certified team can be on-site quickly to assess and contain the issue.
