First step for mold inspection in damp Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's the AC. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in Jumeirah and found a bunch of black spots underneath, and the whole area feels damp. We had that really heavy dew a few weeks ago and I think moisture got in through the sliding door. What’s the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection here in Dubai?

Stop using the affected room and close it off from the rest of the house to prevent spore dispersal. The damp carpet and black spots indicate active growth, which is common after heavy dew events in coastal areas like Jumeirah due to high humidity and condensation.

Your first step is a visual assessment without disturbing the mold. Do not attempt to clean it, as this will aerosolize spores. Document the extent with photos. Given the visible growth and your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. In Dubai, inspectors should follow DM guidelines and use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden moisture sources, often from AC condensate drain leaks or water intrusion through doors/windows.

A proper inspection includes air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis. This identifies the mold species and concentration, which is critical for understanding health risks and planning remediation. For a situation involving persistent dampness and health symptoms, a professional assessment is the necessary first step to determine the full scope.
