First steps for suspected black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside and it feels slightly damp. With all the humidity lately, I’m really worried it’s black mold. What’s the first thing I should do to handle this safely?

First, stop using the closet and carefully remove all clothing and items from it to prevent cross-contamination and allow the area to dry. Do not attempt to scrub or disturb the growth, as this can release a high concentration of spores into your living space.

The dampness on an exterior wall during humid periods strongly suggests condensation, a very common issue here. The constant temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the hot, humid air outside causes moisture to form inside walls, creating the perfect environment for mold. What people call "black mold" is often just a common Cladosporium or Aspergillus species, which are still allergens but not the extremely toxic Stachybotrys that the term evokes.

For a small, contained area like this, you can carefully clean the surface yourself after identifying the moisture source. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Wipe the area with a diluted detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach does not kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. The critical step is to completely dry the surface and address the moisture. Use a dehumidifier in the room and improve air circulation around that closet.

However, given its location on an exterior wall and the damp feeling, the moisture intrusion could be more systemic. If the growth covers more than one square meter, has a musty odour, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is warranted to identify the extent of the problem and the exact species. They can use moisture meters to find the source and recommend fixes, which might include improving wall insulation or sealing.
