Found black mold behind sofa. DIY removal or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a hidden AC leak. The smell is really musty. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company immediately?

Given the size of the patch and the fact your children are symptomatic, calling a professional remediation company is the safest course of action. The persistent cough strongly suggests the mold is actively releasing spores into your apartment's air, which DIY cleaning will not contain.

For a hidden leak in a Deira apartment, the source is likely condensation from an AC unit or a seepage issue, both common in Dubai's humid climate. The first step is to identify and fix that moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning.

If you still choose to attempt containment yourself, strict safety measures are non-negotiable. Isolate the area by sealing it off with plastic sheeting. Wear a well-fitted N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Scrub the affected wall with a detergent solution, but never use bleach as it can release harmful fumes and doesn't prevent regrowth. All cleaning materials and any porous items like the sofa must be bagged and discarded. However, this approach risks cross-contaminating other rooms.

Professional remediation is advised here because they will use engineering controls like negative air pressure and HEPA filtration to prevent the spread of spores during removal. They can also conduct post-remediation verification testing to confirm the air quality is safe—this is the only way to know the job was done correctly. For a situation involving health symptoms and a large infestation, the investment in a certified professional is justified.
