Found black mold behind sofa; doctor first or remove it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I pulled out the sofa in our living room to look for a lost toy and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. The room has felt damp for a while but we just blamed the humidity. What's the safest and most effective way to handle this, and should I get my family checked by a doctor first?

A doctor visit is the immediate priority, especially with persistent respiratory symptoms in children. Document the cough's duration and any other symptoms like congestion or wheezing. A physician can determine if the issue is allergic, asthmatic, or requires treatment, and confirm if the mold is the likely irritant.

For the mold itself, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing a large patch releases a massive amount of spores into your air. In Dubai’s climate, where AC recirculates indoor air, this can spread contamination throughout the home. The source—likely condensation or a slow leak from the AC unit—must be identified and repaired by a professional to prevent immediate regrowth.

Effective remediation requires containment. Professionals will seal off the area with plastic sheeting, use HEPA-filtered negative air machines to prevent spore spread, safely remove the contaminated materials, and HEPA-vacuum the entire zone. Merely spraying a biocide is ineffective and can worsen air quality.

Request a post-remediation verification test from an independent third party to confirm spore counts have returned to safe levels. This is the only way to know the job was done correctly. For a case of this scale with health symptoms, a full professional assessment is strongly advised.
