Found Black Mold Behind Wardrobe: Professional or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing at night for the past couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out their wooden wardrobe from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold covering the entire back of it, right near the AC unit. I'm panicking about their health and don't know what to do first. Should I call a professional mold removal company immediately, or is this something I can handle myself with bleach or vinegar?

Given the size and location of the mold, coupled with your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. This is not a typical DIY situation. The black mold's extent and its proximity to the AC unit suggest a significant moisture issue, likely from condensation or a small leak that has saturated the wall cavity. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold, the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg.
Do not use bleach. It is mostly water and can actually feed the mold roots inside porous materials like drywall and wood, while the fumes can aggravate respiratory issues. Vinegar can kill surface mold but is ineffective on porous materials and will not address the root moisture problem or the hidden growth. Your first step is to isolate the area. Keep the children out of the room and avoid disturbing the mold, as this can release a large number of spores into the air. Then, contact a certified mold inspection company. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping with specialized tools to find the water source and air/o-surface sampling to identify the mold type and spore count indoors versus outdoors. This data is crucial to understand the health risk and plan an effective remediation. In Dubai, reputable remediators follow standards like the IICRC S520. They will contain the area, safely remove contaminated materials like the damaged drywall and wardrobe, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and most importantly, identify and rectify the moisture source to prevent recurrence. The goal is to return the indoor environment to a safe, normal fungal ecology. Given the health symptoms, this is a situation where professional assessment and remediation are the most prudent course of action. |
