Found black mold in apartment; contact landlord or company?« Back to Previous Page

I was cleaning behind the toilet in my JVC apartment and found a whole patch of black mold on the wall. We’ve been here for 2 years and just noticed it, and now I’m worried it’s been there a while. The grout in the shower also looks darker than it used to. What’s the best local company to handle this properly, and should I be talking to my landlord first?

Mold behind a toilet in a JVC apartment is a common issue due to the high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. You should notify your landlord in writing immediately, as they are generally responsible for addressing structural moisture issues and resultant mold under Dubai tenancy laws.

For a patch you've just discovered, start with a thorough cleaning using a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. However, the darkening grout suggests a persistent moisture problem that simple cleaning won't fix. The source could be a small leak from the toilet's seal or condensation within the wall. A professional inspection with a moisture meter is the only way to locate the hidden source; otherwise, the mold will return.

For proper remediation, look for a company with certified mold inspectors (like IICRC-certified) and their own microbiology lab. This is crucial, as they can identify the mold type and provide documented proof that the contamination and moisture have been fully resolved, which you can then share with your landlord. A reputable company will focus on fixing the moisture source first, not just cleaning the visible mold.
