Found black mold in bedroom; DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our two-year-old has been having allergy-like symptoms for a while now, and I just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. We had a small leak from the AC unit a couple of months back that we thought we’d dried properly. What’s the most effective and child-safe way to handle this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

Given the AC leak history and your child's symptoms, this requires immediate professional assessment. The Dubai climate creates perfect conditions for mold regrowth if not fully eradicated. What appears as a surface patch often indicates deeper contamination in walls or under flooring, especially after a leak you believed was resolved.

For a small area (under 1 square meter), you can carefully clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Ensure the room is well-ventilated and keep your child away during and for several hours after the process. However, DIY cleaning often addresses only visible mold, not the hidden spores or the moisture source.

Given the health symptoms and the mold's location behind furniture—suggesting sustained humidity—a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the problem. Crucially, they can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol and confirms the environment is safe for your child post-cleanup. The initial leak from the AC unit also warrants checking the drainage line and drip pan, as recurrent issues are common here.
