Found black mold in bedroom; first inspection step?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in our Dubai Hills villa, I'm worried it's a bigger issue. What's the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection?

The first step is a visual inspection to assess the extent. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to see the full affected area. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are common condensation points where indoor AC coolness meets outdoor heat and humidity, creating a perfect environment for mold.

Do not attempt to clean it yet, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread them. For a patch smaller than one square meter, a thorough cleaning with appropriate protective gear may suffice. However, since this is behind furniture and likely has been growing unnoticed, the visible speckles are often just the tip of the issue. The mold may have penetrated the gypsum board or the insulation behind it.

A professional inspection is recommended for a case like this. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the source of the moisture—whether it's a minor condensation issue or a more serious leak from a pipe or the exterior. This is critical; without fixing the water source, the mold will return. A proper inspection from a science-led company will include surface or air sampling to be analyzed in a lab, which identifies the mold species and informs the correct remediation protocol. This diagnostic approach is the only way to understand the full scope and actual risk, ensuring it is resolved completely.
