Found black mold in Dubai home, health risk for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I just pulled our leather sofa away from the wall in the living room to find a huge patch of black mold. It's on the wall behind where the sofa was, and we've lived here in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it. What's the best way to get this professionally cleaned and treated in Dubai, and should I be worried about my family's health from this?

Black mold growth behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The health risk depends on the species and extent, but for children with increased coughing, it warrants immediate attention. Most molds cause allergic reactions like congestion and irritation; some species can produce toxins.

You need a professional inspection to identify the mold type and the moisture source. The wall likely has a persistent dampness issue that must be resolved first, or the mold will return. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the air quality.

A reputable remediation company in Dubai will isolate the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, remove the contaminated material (e.g., sections of drywall), and treat the area with EPA-approved antimicrobials. The key is their process and verification. They should provide a post-remediation verification (PRV) report, ideally from a third-party lab, confirming spore counts are back to safe levels.

For your family's health, I'd recommend an indoor air quality test to measure spore levels throughout the home, as the problem may not be isolated to that one wall. Focus on companies that lead with diagnostics and evidence, not just cleaning.
