Found black mold in my villa. First step for inspection?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for the last two weeks and I can't figure out why. I just pulled out a storage box from the back of our walk-in wardrobe in Mirdif and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, which must have been growing for months. I'm panicking now that this is what's making them sick. What's the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection to make sure our whole villa is safe?

Stop moving the box or disturbing the mold further, as this can release a large number of spores into the air. The high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create perfect conditions for hidden mold growth behind furniture and in closets, exactly as you've found.
The immediate first step is a visual assessment of the entire villa, focusing on areas with poor ventilation, water history, or condensation. Check under sinks, behind appliances, along AC drip pan lines, and in other storage areas. Document everything with photos. Do not attempt to clean it yet, as improper methods can spread the contamination. For a situation involving health symptoms and a significant find, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the full extent. Look for a provider that uses moisture meters, thermal imaging, and—critically—takes air and surface samples for analysis by an accredited microbiology lab. This lab analysis is the only way to confirm the mold type and concentration, which dictates the remediation protocol. In Dubai, proper remediation must follow DM and DHA guidelines to ensure it is effectively resolved and not just superficially cleaned. Until the inspection, improve ventilation in the room by running an exhaust fan if available and keep the AC on to help control humidity levels. |
