Found black mold on damp wall, treat myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah 3 has felt extra humid since the heavy rains a few weeks ago. I just pulled our large leather sofa away from the wall to clean behind it and discovered a huge patch of black mold spreading up the corner from the baseboard. It’s on an exterior wall and the plaster feels slightly damp. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I immediately call a professional remediation company here in Dubai?

In your Dubai villa's climate, that damp exterior wall with visible black mold indicates a moisture intrusion, likely from the recent heavy rains. Given the extent you describe and the damp plaster, this is beyond a surface cleaning issue.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you could attempt remediation by first addressing the moisture source. Ensure the exterior wall and seals are intact. Then clean the area with a detergent solution, but never use bleach as it can exacerbate moisture problems. However, since the wall is structurally damp and the mold is extensive, a DIY approach risks inadequate treatment and rapid regrowth. The high humidity will fuel it.

Professional remediation is strongly advised here. They will identify and resolve the water entry point, properly contain the area to prevent spore dispersal, use industrial air scrubbers, and remove affected materials like the baseboard and potentially sections of damp plaster. In Dubai, reputable companies follow international standards like IICRC for safe, effective removal. The critical step is a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the mold and spore counts are back to acceptable levels, ensuring the environment is truly healthy. This is the only way to verify the problem is solved.
