Found black mold; should I clean it or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past couple of weeks, and I’m starting to panic. I was cleaning behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall, probably from a slow leak in the AC unit. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been awful lately. What’s the safest way to clean this up myself without putting my family at risk, or should I just call a professional company immediately?

For a patch larger than roughly one square meter, or one caused by an ongoing leak, professional remediation is strongly advised. The risk of spores dispersing during a DIY cleanup is high, especially in an enclosed bedroom, which can worsen respiratory issues like the coughing you've described.

The humid Dubai climate and year-round AC use create a perfect environment for this type of growth. The black, fuzzy appearance indicates active colonization, often from a chronic condensation issue within the wall or AC system.

If you choose to clean a smaller area yourself, strict containment is critical. Isolate the room, shut off the AC, and seal the area with plastic sheeting. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Gently mist the mold with a detergent solution to suppress spores before wiping, and discard all cleaning materials in a sealed bag. However, scrubbing a large patch often embeds spores deeper into the porous wall material.

The underlying moisture source must be identified and fixed; otherwise, the mold will return within weeks. A professional inspection, backed by a certified microbiology lab analysis, can identify the specific species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often not visible. This is the only way to confirm the mold is truly gone and the air is safe, especially with children experiencing symptoms.
