Found mold after leak: DIY cleanup or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the past few weeks and I’m starting to panic. I lifted up the rug in our spare bedroom that we use as a playroom and found a bunch of black, fuzzy patches spreading from the corner of the wall onto the carpet. The room has an outside wall and we had that small leak during the last big storm. What’s the safest way to clean this up myself without putting my family at risk, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

Given the leak history and your children's symptoms, this requires immediate and careful action. For any mold covering more than about one square meter (roughly 10 square feet), or if it resulted from a leak inside the walls, professional remediation is strongly advised. The combination of persistent moisture from the storm and Dubai's high humidity creates ideal conditions for mold to penetrate deep into building materials and carpets.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold by lifting the rug has already likely released spores into the air, which can aggravate respiratory issues. Standard cleaning methods often spread the contamination further. A professional inspection, including moisture mapping behind the wall and lab analysis of the mold type, is the only way to determine the full extent and potential health risks. This is a common scenario here due to our climate and construction methods.

A certified remediation company will use containment barriers, negative air pressure machines, and HEPA filtration to safely remove the contaminated materials and clean the air, preventing cross-contamination to the rest of your home. They can also identify and rectify the underlying moisture source, which is critical to prevent recurrence. Your priority should be to isolate the room, limit your family's access to it, and seek a professional assessment with verifiable before-and-after testing data.
