Found mold behind sofa causing coughs. First cleaning step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the past few weeks and we just can't shake it. I finally pulled out the sofa bed in our Deira apartment to change the sheets and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots all over the wall behind it and the back of the mattress itself. We run the AC all the time but that corner of the living room always feels a bit damp. Could this mold be the reason for our persistent coughs, and what's the first thing I should do to clean this properly without making us sick?

Yes, that black mold is very likely the cause of the persistent coughs, especially in children. The damp, poorly ventilated space behind your sofa in a high-humidity climate like Dubai's Deira is a perfect breeding ground. The constant AC use can create significant condensation against cold exterior walls, feeding mold growth that releases spores into the air you breathe.

The first and most critical step is to isolate the area. Do not disturb the mold by wiping or spraying it, as this will aerosolize a massive number of spores. Carefully move the sofa bed away from the wall and, if possible, seal the affected mattress in a large plastic bag to prevent further contamination. Increase ventilation in the room by opening windows, but keep the door closed to contain spores to that area.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. However, given the description of it being on both the wall and the mattress—a porous material—and the fact that family members are already symptomatic, professional assessment is strongly advised. DIY cleaning on porous materials often fails to address the root moisture problem and can inadvertently spread the infestation.

In Dubai, the underlying issue is almost always excess moisture. A professional inspection will identify the source, which could be a leaking pipe, rising damp, or severe condensation from AC unit airflow and temperature differentials. They can also perform lab testing to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding health risks and determining the correct remediation protocol, as not all black-colored mold is the toxic Stachybotrys, though any mold can cause allergic reactions. The mattress may need to be disposed of, as deeply embedded mold in upholstery is nearly impossible to fully remediate.
