Found mold behind sofa; is my family safe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Khalifa City villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a hidden humidity issue. I'm panicking about their health and don't know where to start. Is it safe for us to stay in the house, and can anyone recommend a professional mold removal company that actually does proper remediation and testing?

The priority is to get your family away from the immediate exposure. Move the children to a different, well-ventilated room and keep the door to the affected area closed. For many healthy individuals, this type of mold causes irritation—persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies—which aligns with your children's symptoms. The risk is higher for young children and those with asthma or compromised immune systems.

Do not attempt to remove it yourself. Disturbing the mold releases a massive amount of spores into the air, significantly increasing inhalation risk. In Dubai's climate, hidden humidity issues are common, especially in villas where external walls can develop condensation from the constant AC use battling the external heat and humidity. The mold behind your sofa is a symptom of a moisture problem that must be identified and fixed first; otherwise, it will simply return.

You need a professional assessment from a company that specializes in mold diagnostics, not just cleaning. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source. Remediation should follow DHA and DM guidelines, which include containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials. Crucially, the process is only verified with before-and-after air quality testing conducted by an independent microbiology lab to confirm spore counts have returned to safe levels. Any provider you contact should be able to explain this process and provide sample lab reports; this is how you distinguish a science-driven service from a basic cleaning. Request an assessment to get a clear picture of the extent and a plan for remediation.
