Found mold behind sofa. Professional cleaning or building complaint first?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled our leather sofa away from the wall in the living room and found a huge patch of black and green fuzzy stuff spreading from the corner, right behind where the AC vent is. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. What's the best way to get this professionally cleaned and treated in Dubai, and should I be complaining to my building management first?

Mold growth behind furniture, especially near an AC vent, is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning causing condensation. This is a significant find, as it can certainly be a source of the respiratory irritation and coughing you're describing in your children.

Your immediate step should be to document the issue thoroughly. Take clear photographs and videos showing the extent of the mold and its proximity to the AC unit and vent. This evidence is crucial. You should then formally complain to your building management or landlord in writing, referencing Dubai Municipality's regulations that hold property owners responsible for maintaining a habitable and healthy environment, which includes addressing moisture and mold problems originating from building infrastructure.

Simultaneously, you should seek a professional indoor health inspection. A proper assessment will determine the source of the moisture—whether it's a leaking AC drain line, poor insulation causing condensation, or another issue—and the full extent of the contamination. For a patch of significant size, DIY cleaning is not advised as it can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. Professional remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause and the visible growth. The inspection results will also provide the documented evidence needed to ensure your building management addresses the root cause properly, preventing it from recurring after cleaning.
