Found mold behind toy chest, first inspection step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having a persistent cough and runny noses for the last month, especially after they've been playing in their bedroom. I’ve just pulled out their toy chest from against the wall and found a patch of black spots behind it that smells really damp. We’re in a villa in Mirdif and I’m really worried about their health. What’s the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection?

The first step is to isolate the area. Keep the children out of the room and avoid disturbing the mold yourself, as this can release spores into the air. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach or other household products, as this often only bleaches the surface and leaves the root structure intact, allowing it to return quickly.

Given the symptoms you've described and the visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The damp smell indicates active growth, and the location behind furniture is a classic sign of a condensation issue, common in Dubai villas where exterior walls can sweat due to the extreme humidity outside meeting cooled interior air. An inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source of the moisture—which is the critical part—and assess the full extent of the growth, often inside the wall cavity. They should also take an air sample from the children's bedroom and a control sample from outside for lab analysis to identify the spore types and concentrations, which is essential for understanding the health risk and planning the proper remediation. This documented, science-led approach is what differentiates a proper inspection from a superficial one.
