Found mold behind wardrobe, how to clean safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom today and found a huge patch of black mold covering the entire wall behind it, probably from a slow AC leak. I'm panicking about their health. What's the fastest and most effective way to get this professionally cleaned and make sure it's safe for them?

Stop using the room immediately and keep the children out. The priority is halting their exposure. In Dubai's climate, that mold will continue to spread if the moisture source isn't fixed. The AC leak must be repaired first by a certified HVAC technician; no cleaning will be effective otherwise.
For a patch that large and given the health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your home. Look for a company that follows IICRC standards for mold remediation. They will use containment barriers, HEPA air scrubbers, and professional-grade antimicrobials to treat the area safely. The wall cavity itself may need to be opened and inspected, as the mold you see is often just the surface growth. After remediation, request a clearance test from an independent third-party, like a company with its own microbiology lab, to verify the spore count in the air has returned to normal levels. This is the only way to confirm the environment is safe for your children to return. Their persistent cough is a significant indicator that the indoor air quality has been compromised and needs to be professionally addressed. |
