Found mold in kids' room, what's first step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and their allergies seem way worse in their bedroom. I just pulled out a toy box from against the wall and found a patch of black and greenish mold behind it. We live in an older villa in Al Barsha and I'm really worried about their health. What's the first thing I should do and can anyone recommend a reliable mold inspection company that does a thorough job and isn't just going to do a surface clean?

First, isolate the area by moving the toy box and keeping the kids out of the room. Wearing a mask, wipe the visible patch with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner to prevent immediate spore dispersal, but understand this is only a temporary surface fix. The critical issue is identifying and resolving the moisture source, which in an older Al Barsha villa is often condensation from AC units, a small leak in the wall, or moisture wicking up from the foundation due to our high humidity.

Given the health symptoms and the hidden nature of the growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Surface cleaning alone is insufficient if there's mold inside the wall cavity or AC system, which is common here. A proper inspection uses moisture meters, thermal imaging, and most importantly, air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab. This identifies the species and spore count, which is essential to understand the health risk and guide the correct remediation method.

Look for a provider whose process is driven by this diagnostic testing, not just cleaning. They should offer a clear inspection report with lab results before any remediation plan is proposed. This evidence-based approach separates thorough companies from those offering superficial services. You can verify a company's credibility by asking for their DHA registration and if their methodologies align with standards like the IICRC S520.
