Found mold, kids coughing. How urgent to see doctor?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I was just checking behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall, probably from a hidden condensation leak from the AC unit. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I'm panicking, especially for my 3-year-old. How urgent is this and should I take them to a doctor immediately or just call a cleaning company first?

See a pediatrician for the cough first, as they can assess if it's a respiratory infection or allergy and provide immediate treatment for your children.

The urgency of the mold cleanup is high. A large patch behind a wardrobe from a suspected AC leak indicates an ongoing moisture issue, which will continue to fuel mold growth. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use, condensation leaks are a common hidden problem. Do not attempt to clean a patch this large yourself, as disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores into the air, potentially worsening your family's symptoms.

You need a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source—likely a clogged condensate drain line or an insulation issue with the AC unit. The remediation process should include containment of the area, safe removal of affected porous materials like drywall, and HEPA vacuuming to remove spores, not just surface wiping. Following cleanup, the underlying AC issue must be repaired to prevent immediate recurrence. A reputable company can provide before-and-after air quality test results to verify the spore count in your home has been returned to a normal level.
