Found mold under carpet, how to inspect properly?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom and found a bunch of black spots underneath, right near the wall. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and I'm worried it's spread behind the drywall. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I call a specialist or my building management first?

Stop using the room and avoid disturbing the area further, as this can release spores. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold behind drywall is a legitimate concern due to high humidity and constant AC use, which can create condensation points.

Your first call should be to your building management, as this is likely a building envelope or leak issue they are responsible for. They often have preferred contractors for such issues. However, for a truly proper inspection, a specialist is needed. A thorough inspection involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping with professional meters to find the water source and often air or surface sampling to identify the mold type, which dictates the remediation approach.

Look for an indoor environmental professional who provides documented evidence of the problem's extent and cause, not just a company that immediately offers to remove it. A science-driven approach with a microbiology lab can identify the species, which is critical for understanding potential health risks and ensuring the correct remediation protocol is followed.
